The Deacon Ministry serves God through compassionate leadership, spiritual guidance and practical support for our church family and community. Deacons care for the congregation, support the Pastor and help keep the church spiritually and physically well.
History
The Deacon Ministry was established in 1875, alongside the founding of the church. It has had eight chairpersons, beginning with Deacon John Hunter. Deacon J.C.N. Howard, Sr. held the longest tenure, serving 39 years (1954–1993). The current chairperson, Deacon Joyce A. Moore Liberty, is the first woman to hold the position.
The Deaconess Ministry was established in 1987 by act of the Church Conference, with Deacon Mary E. Howard as its first chairperson. Since 2008, men and women alike serve under the title of Deacon.
Deacon Stephen Day
The ministry’s main annual event, Deacon Stephen Day, is celebrated every September with a special program.
